With 2013 underway and a new batch of apps waiting in the wings, it is time to reflect on the apps for iPhone and Android which came our way across the past year.

Action Movie FX

This free app for the iPhone allows you to add special effects such as explosions, along with a wide range of appropriate sound effects, to your home videos.

It should go without saying that it is intended as a bit of fun and is not suited to serious filmmaking work, but it does its job perfectly. Action Movie FX currently has a rating of four and a half stars at the Apple store, so it has obviously found an enthusiastic userbase.

Back in Black

Back in Black is a simple but efficient app which can be used for keeping track of everyday finance. Enter in a budget for the month and keep a log of every purchase you make, and the app will record whether you are achieving your goal.

It even has different categories for different areas of spending: clothing, groceries, entertainment, medical needs and so forth. It is available for the iPhone at £2.49, although its three-star rating at the Apple store suggests that some people prefer a pen and paper for this job.

After the disappointment of Apple’s own map-reading app, many were relieved to see Google Maps become freely available for the iPhone, along with Android, so virtually all smartphones.

At the time of writing, it has a near-perfect four and a half stars at the Apple store. The app provides everything which users have come to expect from Google Maps: a simple, easy-to-use interface and a comprehensive area of coverage.

Camera Awesome

This free app for the iPhone manages to improve upon the device’s built-in camera. It was very well received, and has earned a rating of four and a half stars at the Apple store. Amongst its special features is the ability to engage with the blogging system Tumblr.

Dead Trigger

Last but not least, here is one for the video game enthusiasts. Dead Trigger is a free app for the Android in which you are given the chance to step into the boots of a zombie-hunting action hero. The Google store currently records a four and a half star rating from players.
